Day 112-114 - January 20th-22nd, 2006 |
Friday
Well, I'm through Dayton. Jim and Collette Herbig have been fabulous hosts. Collette's brother, Tom Loges, is a glowing asset as well. Drop offs and pick ups. Free lunch...I mean ... way cool.
The Herbigs even took me to a Dayton Flyer/Temple Owl basketball game two nights. ago. Unfortunately the Owls won the game. But it was entertaining and the proud new owner of a Dayton Flyer ball cap. Yowser. There's a story about the Heartbeat Trail in this months in flight magazine on American Airlines. It's called American Way magazine. Also, In todays, tomorrow or Sunday's Dayton Daily News another story will be published. (see our Media Coverage page) Hopefully we'll generate some more cash and a little vehicle support. It's getting to the point where I wish I had my truck with me. That way I'd only have to hitch one way each day. After I leave the Herbig's sphere of influence my next known support is a kindly woman by the name of Zerna. I'll be hooking up with her somewhere west of Interstate 69 in central Indiana near a town called Kokomo. Just like the Beach Boys song. But something tells me they were singing about another Kokomo. I'll find out and let you know.
I'm on my way to Greenville, Ohio now. Should be into Indiana by Sunday afternoon. If all goes well I'll be in Union City, Indiana in time for the Denver-Pittsburgh football game. Of course if Denver wins it's another Super Bowl. Yippeee! It rained three days ago...snowed two days ago, was clear and middle 50s yesterday and more of the same is expected for today. I'm sure I'm jinxing myself but I haven't had to walk in anything under 28 degrees F yet. Where is winter? Bye for now. Take care and keep on howling. Owoooooooooooooooooooooooh!
Saturday
Today was one of those good days. Got in close to 20 miles today. Cool, slight breeze and no rain or snow.
Many folks stopped to ask if I was ok. Including a cop. Very nice and attractive woman...goes by the name of C. Hutcheson. She's a deputy for the Darke County Sheriffs Office in greenville, Ohio. She stopped to see if I was ok and she ended up really helping me out. When she stopped I'd been looking for a "safe" place to go potty.
The environment was just a little too busy if you know what I mean. After our interview I asked about the closest bathroom and she provided me with a free ride to the closest facility. God bless the Darke County Sheriff's office. Thank you Deputy Hutcheson for assisting a visitor in need. She also let other agencies along my route know of my journey. This is a good thing. It will help avoid future hassles with law enforcement. I think I'll start telling the police about my travel plans when I enter each new state or province. This is a great example of cops being good guys. I be howling for them tonight. Owooooooooooooooooooooooooooooh!
Took the day off Sunday to watch football - bad day at Bronco rock. What can I say. But I'm in Indiana and should be in Gary or Chicago around Super Bowl Sunday, probably take that day off and (reluctantly) cheer for the Seahawks!
