The hosts of this site, along with many in our community and all over the region, were saddened by the passing of Buckwheat Donahue on October 14, 2019 in Oklahoma, where he had moved in 2018. He had been in declining health for some time. Please see his Obituary which appeared in The Skagway News on October 25, 2019. A "Howling Celebration of Life" was held in Skagway on November 23, 2020 at the Eagles. Buckwheat-themed tributes also were on display during the 2020 Buckwheat International Ski Classic and the North Words Writers Symposium, two events that he founded and orchestrated. We love you and miss you, BW!

Buckwheat's Walk and Paddle
Buckwheat Donahue's Heartbeat Trail walk and paddle is a fund-raiser for Skagway's Dahl Memorial Clinic, so it may better serve the health needs of residents and visitors to our community. Buckwheat had several heart episodes in Oct. 2003 while passing through Juneau, Alaska. He was able to get to a hospital in time, but if he had been home in Skagway, he may not have survived. After that scare, he committed himself to walking, not only for his health, but to raise awareness for others, and to give something back to his community. He walked from Skagway to Whitehorse (110 miles), and then from Whitehorse to Dawson City in the Yukon (another 450 miles), and on Oct. 1 he began the Heartbeat Trail, a cross-continental walk and paddle that will take him from Florida to Alaska.

Buckwheat was featured in the Dec. 9-11, 2005 edition of USA WEEKEND, a Sunday supplement that appeared in about 600 newspapers across the United States. A larger-than-life character, Buckwheat Donahue gives his heart to tiny Skagway.
Buckwheat resembles a good-looking country-western singer: silver-haired, square-shouldered, big-chested, bearded. His perpetual smile says, “Hey, ain’t this fun?” He fills rooms with his presence and his voice, and dispenses hugs and howls. His friend Mike Sica calls him a human bellows, a “cross between Pavarotti and Rodney Dangerfield.”
